The purpose here is to reduce your outstanding debt amount or lower interest rates and eliminate late fees/penalty charges. The consultant will also help you to avoid harassing calls from creditors and collection agencies.
Step 3: The consultant will provide you with budgeting tips so as to help you manage your money better. He'll also guide you on how to rebuild your credit and raise your credit score.

Credit and debt advisors will review your current situation, and collaborate with you to determine the most effective financial strategies to address current problems and meet future goals. They also help you develop a personalized plan to get on stable footing and avoid financial pitfalls down the road.It can happen to any of us: A job loss. A natural disaster. A medical crisis. Any number of unexpected events could potentially lead to mounting debt--and even the most prepared individual is not immune.
If you're overextended, Credit Counseling or Debt Management Plans (DMP) provide a systematic way to pay down your outstanding debt. With a Debt Management Plan a Credit Counselor works with you and your creditors to design a manageable, tailored plan that will minimize monthly payments, interest and related fees--and reduce or eliminate those stressful collection calls. You make monthly deposits to the DMP agency, payments are disbursed monthly to your creditors, and your full payment is posted to the account.
The DMP takes approximately 36-60 months to repay debts -and once you've met these obligations, Credit Counselors help you reestablish your credit.
Credit Counseling is a proven successful approach to debt relief, which is suitable for consumers with large amounts of debt who are possibly considering bankruptcy. A Credit Counselor negotiates with the creditors to lower the monthly payment; while the debtor saves their money for installment payments. After the debt is paid, the creditor will send a letter stating the debt obligation has been fulfilled. In addition, the creditor will report to the credit bureaus that the debt has been, "Paid".
